BurghSong Concert Series Returns this Month

Brad Yoder Since 2015, Sunburst has been hosting the BurghSong concert series, which brings intimate living room style performances from local and national songwriters to Pittsburgh. The Spring season will feature shows on the 3rd Saturday of the month in March, April and May.

This month’s show features local songwriting legend Brad Yoder. Brad has had a long career of writing and performing as well as hosting concerts and songwriting workshops in the Pittsburgh area. Brad will perform with longtime collaborator, upright bassist Jason Rafalak. On the national side is terrific indie-folk singer songwriter Kipyn Martin hailing from Washington, DC.

Here’s the lineup for the spring season:

Saturday, March 17 – Kipyn Martin / Brad Yoder
Saturday, April 21 – Tim Grimm / Kayla Schureman
Saturday, May 19 – Mare Wakefield and Nomad / Casey Hanner (Hey! You know her!)

Ticket prices are $15 in advance, $20 at the door, and $10 for Sunburst Students (wow!)

We also had another successful Disney themed cabaret that helped us raise money for the Sunburst Scholarship Fund. House Band Student Feature: Shira?? ⚡️

Meet Shira, the keys player and vocalist for this year’s House Band! She’s been a student with us for about 5 years and is quite the multi-instrumentalist! In addition to voice and keys, she also plays the guitar and bass. You can see her sing lead and play guitar in her other band Korok, which is also part of the Sunburst Band Program. We’re stoked to have Shira in the House Band this year!

I play bass and I sing

2. How long have you been playing your instrument?
I have played bass for the last 4 years and have been taking lessons as sunburst for around 3. I started taking voice lessons with Casey when I was 4 or 5 so it’s been about 11 years.

3. What inspired you to start taking music lessons?
My older sister is a musician and has always inspired me to play music - I love playing and singing with her.

4. What have you been listening to lately?
Lately I’ve been listening to Rosalia’s new album LUX and a lot of Bobby Gentry.

5. What song are you most excited for your friends to hear at the next House Band show?
I’m really proud of like eating glass - the instrumental is complicated but I think we all sound really together and it shows how we work as a team.

We’re refreshing the Sunburst website and want real students front and center! We're looking for volunteers of all ages for a fun photo shoot on Sunday, July 27th from 1–4pm. Sign up with the link in our bio!

We're looking to capture the everyday magic that happens at our school, including students in lessons with their teachers, group classes and band rehearsals in action, Music Together classes in session, and students around our studio simply enjoying making music! All participants will receive hi-rez copies of their photos to send to grandma, print on a mug, etc.—plus our eternal gratitude!

The Sunburst Producers Meet Up is a free monthly session hosted by @cscott412 —his track is featured on this post! New and established producers ages 14+ are encouraged to join and share their works in progress and receive feedback from peers. All genres and levels of experience are welcome as well.

Participants are encouraged to come with music to share in a .WAV, .AIFF, or high quality .MP3 format.
