About the program
Band together, grow together
Playing in a band is one of the best ways to progress as a musician. In the Sunburst Band Program, students are placed in a band with peers at a similar age, skill level, and musical style, meeting weekly with an experienced coach to learn songs, tighten their sound, and master what it really means to collaborate.
And it is truly their band. Students take creative ownership of their group by choosing a band name, designing custom merch, and building a set list they are proud to play. Every term leads up to a live finale show at a local Pittsburgh venue, complete with the stage, lights, and a full audience.
To get the most out of the experience, this program is designed for students who have selected a primary instrument and have basic playing fundamentals down like keeping a steady beat, playing chord progressions, and performing a full song from start to finish. Private lessons alongside the band program are not required, but highly encouraged, so individual skills and ensemble playing grow together.

Frequently asked questions
Good to know before you book
Is my child ready for the Band Program?
If they've picked a primary instrument and have the basics down, they're ready: keeping a steady beat, playing chords or a chord progression, and getting through a full song from start to finish. Not sure? Ask their teacher, or call us and we'll help you decide.
Are kids grouped by age?
Age is one factor, not the only one. We build each band around age, instrument, experience, and musical taste, so the group actually works together. Sometimes a younger student will play up in an older band when it makes sense for everyone. Get in touch with our admin team and we'll talk through the options for your child.
Do band members need private lessons too?
Lessons are not required, but highly encouraged: they build the individual skills that bands count on. Band members also get discounted lesson rates at Sunburst.
Can we try a session before committing?
There are no trial sessions, but if the program turns out not to be a fit you can cancel within the first month for a full refund.
What if we miss a rehearsal?
The band plays on. Missed sessions can't be refunded or made up, since the whole group shares the rehearsal.
How does enrollment work?
Bands run in three terms a year: September to January, February to May, and June to August. You pay month to month but commit through the end of the term, and current members get a priority re-enrollment window before spots open to everyone.
What about adults?
Band Program 18+ runs on the same format, with bands and gigs built for grown-ups. Find it under Programs.
