Time to Sign Up for Summer Recitals!

Dear Sunburst Students,

We are super excited to announce that our 2026 Summer Recitals will be held at the JCC in the Katz Performing Arts Center on June 6th and 7th! These events are our favorite time of the year when we encourage each of our students to share their progress on stage. Whether you’ve been playing and performing for years or this is your very first recital with us, we know you’ll do great. Read on for a few more details about how we do these events.

Each teacher has been assigned to an hour-long block, with some teachers having their own session, and some teachers with lighter loads sharing the hour. Starting now, students can sign up to perform during their instructor's designated session. There are a few teachers whose sessions will be held on June 12th–13th here at Sunburst, see the list using the link below. If you can’t make your instructor's session, let us know! We’ll find a slot so you can still perform.

Participation is free but there is an option both online while signing up and in-person to donate to the Sunburst Music Scholarship Fund, our charitable program that allows kids to take lessons for free. We appreciate your support!

Finally, adults are welcome to join the regular session with their instructors, or can join the BYOB adults-only session on June 12th from 7-9pm here at Sunburst. These are always a ton of fun!

House Band Student Feature: Shira?? ⚡️

Meet Shira, the keys player and vocalist for this year’s House Band! She’s been a student with us for about 5 years and is quite the multi-instrumentalist! In addition to voice and keys, she also plays the guitar and bass. You can see her sing lead and play guitar in her other band Korok, which is also part of the Sunburst Band Program. We’re stoked to have Shira in the House Band this year!

1. What Instruments do you play?
I play bass and I sing

2. How long have you been playing your instrument?
I have played bass for the last 4 years and have been taking lessons as sunburst for around 3. I started taking voice lessons with Casey when I was 4 or 5 so it’s been about 11 years.

3. What inspired you to start taking music lessons?
My older sister is a musician and has always inspired me to play music - I love playing and singing with her.

4. What have you been listening to lately?
Lately I’ve been listening to Rosalia’s new album LUX and a lot of Bobby Gentry.

5. What song are you most excited for your friends to hear at the next House Band show?
I’m really proud of like eating glass - the instrumental is complicated but I think we all sound really together and it shows how we work as a team.

Connect and collaborate through rhythm and in the moment music making. Matt will teach the body language and signals to help everyone create exciting and cohesive music in a few short minutes. Musical games, collaborative exercises and social connection games will be presented throughout the drum circle to help the group form a deep and connected groove.

The drum circle will begin at 6pm and go til 8pm.
Participants are encouraged to stay for the full session, but are also welcome to pop in and out.

No previous drumming or musical skill is needed and instruments are provided. Feel free to bring your own drum if you have one.
