Thanakarn Limtham Jazz Trio

Jazz Show Trio Interview

Save the date! Dr. Bank's jazz trio will be putting on a wonderful evening of music on Saturday, March 29th, at Sunburst. The trio, featuring Dr. Bank, Charlie Scott, and Stephen Weinstein, will perform a selection of Dr. Bank's original compositions written specifically for the group. We hope to see you there!

Location: Sunburst School of Music

Date: Saturday, March 29th

Time: 7pm

Cost: $20

Interview with Dr. Bank Limtham

What inspired the original compositions you’ll be performing with the trio?
Moving to Pittsburgh and getting to know the city over the past few years has been quite an inspiring journey for me. I have really been touched by the city's lively community and rich history of jazz. My compositions are a way for me to share my personal story, shaped by all the experiences and inspirations I've found here.

How did you approach arranging your music specifically for this trio format?

I have had the pleasure of working with many wonderful colleagues here at Sunburst. Stephen Weinstein and Charlie Scott, who both share a passion for playing jazz, have been incredible teammates on this project. Throughout our rehearsals and jam sessions, I shared my ideas with them, and they not only listened but also helped me to develop and bring those ideas to life. Their support and collaboration mean a lot to me, and I am grateful for their dedication and talent.

What do you hope the audience takes away from your performance?

I hope that I can encourage people to listen to new perspectives, both in music and in life. The work that I create now only exists because of the many years that I have spent listening to and learning from so many artists from all over the world who have come before me. I also aim to set an example and encourage music students to explore and learn various musical styles as extensively as possible.

Can you share a bit about your journey as a musician and composer?

I am a classically trained pianist, but my approach to music-making is influenced by many different styles. Jazz music has always had a special place in my life as an artist and has allowed me to express myself very directly and freely. I wrote this music as someone who has been a long-time lover and performer of Jazz, and I’m excited to show another side of myself by playing my original work.

What is your favorite part about performing these original compositions?

Creating and sharing music you love is always rewarding. The process of working with Stephen and Charlie to transform my raw ideas into more polished pieces has been really fulfilling. Making music with and for other people is a vulnerable experience, and I hope that the audience can feel the sincerity in my creative expression.

Welcome Back Riley!

We’re thrilled to announce that Riley Deringor, a former Sunburst student, is returning—this time as an instructor! Riley will be teaching voice, guitar, and music production, sharing his expertise and passion for music with our community.

Riley began his musical journey right here at Sunburst before continuing his studies in voice and music production at Sarah Lawrence College. Since then, he’s worked in recording studios across NYC, coached artists in voice and songwriting, and performed with bands nationwide.

Riley believes that “singing is all about having the confidence to let the whole world know exactly who you are,” and he’s excited to help students discover their own unique voices. Whether you’re looking to sing, play guitar, or dive into music production, Riley’s here to guide you every step of the way!

Join us in giving Riley a warm Sunburst welcome!

August- Issue #96
July 30, 2025
As summer break comes to a close, we’re gearing up for the next term of the Sunburst Band Program and would love to see some new faces this fall. Playing in a band is one of the best ways to progress as a musician, so we put together a list of five reasons why we encourage our students to seek out opportunities to play in groups—whether it's starting a band or jamming with a couple of friends. Progress Your rhythm, timing, and listening skills improve quickly when you start playing in a band or group setting. While private lessons and solo practice are essential pieces of the puzzle, playing with others introduces new variables—like tempo changes, dynamics, and coordination—that challenge you to stay in sync with your bandmates and adapt to each other. We’ve seen so many students level up after just a couple months in the Sunburst Band Program–the progress happens fast! Friends and Connections We love watching our students and their families become friends and our band program has been a natural starting point for many of those relationships. Some of our current bands have stayed together for years, and it's awesome to see them hang out outside of lessons and support each other at shows. Plus, one of the best ways to get gigs is through connections with other musicians! Motivation Playing in a band is super motivating because you're part of a group working toward an exciting shared goal. Whether you're learning a new song, building a set list, or getting ready for a show, the process becomes more exciting and rewarding when you're making music you love with people you enjoy being around. That shared energy turns practice into something much more fun and meaningful. Performing Performing can be nerve-wracking, but it gets easier the more you do it, and being on stage with your friends makes it less scary. We love seeing how our students' stage presence and confidence grow with each performance—it’s one of our favorite parts of being teachers! As we mentioned, shows are a great place to make connections with musicians who you’d like to collaborate with in the future. Simply put, playing more shows leads to playing more shows. Creative Outlet Music is a powerful tool for expression, and it’s important to have outlets for that at any age! Life is very fast paced for many of us, and it can be tough to pause and do the things you enjoy. Band practice can be a consistent anchor in your week—something you can rely on for connection, processing, and creating with your bandmates. As corny as it sounds, playing music is good for your spirit! If you’d like to know more about the Sunburst Band Program, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us for more information. We also recommend talking with your private lessons instructor so that they’re aware and can help you prepare.
