Digital Audio Workstation
A digital audio workstation or DAW is software used to create, record and shape your music. There are quite a few DAWs to choose from, at Sunburst we teach primarily two.
GarageBand
With a large selection of software instruments, digital audio effects and easy-to-use interface GarageBand is a great place to start recording and composing your own music. Developed exclusively for MacOS, GarageBand can be downloaded for free onto any iMac or MacBook product from the App Store.
Ableton Live
Unmatched in how well it handles both digital and recorded music, Live is a program used by professionals but also a great tool for learning fundemental skills. All three versions of Live can downloaded for Mac or PC from Ableton’s website. We suggest you start with the ‘Intro’ version which costs $100 and gradually expand with plug-ins and upgrades as you learn.
MIDI Controllers
A MIDI controller is a piece of external hardware like a keyboard or drum-pad that allows you to create music in ‘real-time’. Musicians often prefer them because they allow for more spontaneity and intuitive decision making. The cost and quality vary greatly but around $100 is often a good price point for your first purchase.
We also teach a live DJ controller called DJ Serato that costs roughly $300 and a more fully interactive controller specifically designed for Live called Push that starts around $400.
Headphones & Speakers
Once you start shaping your sound it’s important to listen to your music through professional quality equipment. Hearing the full spectrum of high and low frequencies through a ‘neutral’ audio source allows you to give a depth and clarity to your sound that can’t be done with consumer grade equipment like ‘Beats by Dre’ or standard computer speakers.
Audio-Technica’s ATH-M30x
AKG’s K240STUDIO
and Sony’s MDR‐V6
are all great studio quality headphones that cost around $70.
PreSonus’s Eris 5
M-Audio’s AV42
and Mackie’s MR524-5
are studio monitors (or speakers) that come highly recommended and cost between $100- 150.
Microphones & Pre-Amps
Microphones and pre-amps are used for capturing vocals and live instruments. A microphone will capture a signal and a pre-amp will process that signal into your DAW. Prices for microphones vary greatly and because there is such a large variety of them we recommend you consult our staff before making your purchase.
Most likely your first microphone, pre-amp and amenities like stands and cables will cost $150-250.
Where to Buy?
Though there are always exceptions most of the items cannot be purchased in a traditional music store and need to be ordered online. Amazon and eBay will often have what you need but we recommend you checking these websites for what are often the best deals.

Sign ups are officially open for our Summer Recitals! As a reminder, each teacher is assigned to one or two 45 minute sessions during the first two weeks of June. Students can sign up by using the link below, or let us know here and we can help get you signed up. A few more reminders about recitals: Participation is free but we also collect donations to our Scholarship Fund . You can add a donation to your check out, or we take cash at the door, thank you for your contributions! Each session is about 45 minutes, will feature 12–15 students and we expect between 40–60 people in attendance. Friends and family are welcome, if you’d like to bring more than 4 family members just please let us know so we can plan seating etc. If you can’t make it to your instructor’s sessions and would still like to perform let us know! We want to make sure everyone who wants to gets a chance. Adults are welcome to perform in the normal sessions with their instructor, or in the special BYOB adults only session! Not all instructors will be in attendance for the adult sessions, so please discuss with them so you know if they’ll be there. Normally scheduled lessons and programs are ongoing during some of the earlier recital times, so please be aware when coming and going during the recitals. We are here to help with any of your recital related inquiries (and all others of course), please let us know. We can’t wait for this year’s performances!!

The first Quest Labs session with the Environmental Charter School was a success! Last month, we launched an intersession music production workshop with a cohort of ECS 8th graders. The Quest Labs program at ECS aims to provide students with opportunities to develop industry-level skills in their areas of interest and collaborate with individuals in their community who have experience working in those fields. Our dedicated instructors, Charlie Scott and Daniel Hayashi, are doing just that! They spent the first day guiding the group through the fundamental aspects of production, covering drums and beat-making, the creation and utilization of basic loops, and navigating SoundTrap—the Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) that we used for the workshop. Even on the first day, this group showcased impressive creativity, leaving us eager to hear how their projects will evolve over the next few months. By the end, we plan to release a compilation of their projects, including original artwork! We hope that you’ll stay tuned for our next recap in the January Newsletter. In the meantime, check out the amazing photos that ECS graciously took for us!

What an incredible weekend of performances for Sunburst students! Our student Open Mic Night on Friday was truly special with a supportive crowd thanks to our amazing community of students and families. Finally Sunday was the culmination of the 2023 Sunburst House Band season at the Government Center. The show included two awesome opening sets from Sunburst related acts Aurora and Abbey Kelkenberg. The House Band put on a blistering performance making a diverse selection of technically challenging songs look easy, and clearly having a blast. Sean (aka the House Band rhythm guitarist) also led the audience in a special birthday serenade to his brother Ethan who is also one of our delightful students! Huge thank you and congratulations to this group! Especially our graduating members Nate and Nina who’ve both been a part of Sunburst groups for a decade. A spiffy little trick from guitar instructor @jonathandigiulian. Check it out… Artificial harmonics are when a guitarist creates a harmonic where it does not naturally occur on the instrument. One way to get these artificial harmonics involves using a specific right hand technique demonstrated in this video. The guitarist most commonly associated with this technique is Lenny Breau. The wait is over! Our remodeling at Sunburst is finally complete. First of all, we would like to thank everyone for their patience during the process. We can’t wait to share our new space with you for years to come. To celebrate, we’re going to be hosting an Open House event on Saturday February 25th from 3-7pm. This event will cater to new and prospective students, current and former students, and our community at large. For anyone looking to try a new instrument we’ll have a few teachers offering free 5 minute “Mini-lessons”, we’ll also be running some demonstrations of our group programs. Current students can tour the school and peek into any of the rooms they don’t usually get to see. We’ll also have performances on stage from students and staff, snacks, games, and a few giveaways. We’ll be posting a more detailed schedule of activities as we get closer to the event. We’d like to thank you, again, for being a part of the Sunburst community. What an incredible weekend of performances for Sunburst students! Our student Open Mic Night on Friday was truly special with a supportive crowd thanks to our amazing community of students and families. Finally Sunday was the culmination of the 2023 Sunburst House Band season at the Government Center. The show included two awesome opening sets from Sunburst related acts Aurora and Abbey Kelkenberg. The House Band put on a blistering performance making a diverse selection of technically challenging songs look easy, and clearly having a blast. Sean (aka the House Band rhythm guitarist) also led the audience in a special birthday serenade to his brother Ethan who is also one of our delightful students! Huge thank you and congratulations to this group! Especially our graduating members Nate and Nina who’ve both been a part of Sunburst groups for a decade. A spiffy little trick from guitar instructor @jonathandigiulian. Check it out… Artificial harmonics are when a guitarist creates a harmonic where it does not naturally occur on the instrument. One way to get these artificial harmonics involves using a specific right hand technique demonstrated in this video. The guitarist most commonly associated with this technique is Lenny Breau. The wait is over! Our remodeling at Sunburst is finally complete. First of all, we would like to thank everyone for their patience during the process. We can’t wait to share our new space with you for years to come. To celebrate, we’re going to be hosting an Open House event on Saturday February 25th from 3-7pm. This event will cater to new and prospective students, current and former students, and our community at large. For anyone looking to try a new instrument we’ll have a few teachers offering free 5 minute “Mini-lessons”, we’ll also be running some demonstrations of our group programs. Current students can tour the school and peek into any of the rooms they don’t usually get to see. We’ll also have performances on stage from students and staff, snacks, games, and a few giveaways. We’ll be posting a more detailed schedule of activities as we get closer to the event. We’d like to thank you, again, for being a part of the Sunburst community.
