An interview with students, Maureen & Karen

Karen (Left) Maureen (Right)

What got you both involved with music?

Maureen: "We grew up in families that was always involved with music!"

Karen: "Church! Choirs! I had been singing in church every since I was a little girl and my aunt was the children's choir director!"

Maureen: "Musical theater and family talent shows too!"

Karen: "Right, and as a young adult, I met Maureen in the choir, and we've been singing for over 30 years!"

How are your experiences with your shared lesson?

Maureen: "Having a shared lesson with Karen is a lot of fun!"

Karen: "I've found that you and your best friends will always encourage and cheer for each other - and it's easy to do when you're doing cool things together!"

Maureen: "Exactly. She keeps me accountable!"

Karen: "And we've had a tons of lessons over the years with extraordinary teachers. Each one has been so skilled, knowledgable, and professional!"

What experiences have shaped you as musicians?

Karen: "My parents loved blues and jazz! My aunt sang opera. I played clarient in school. I've always had musical experiences around me, and they've made me passionate about always striving to be better!"

Maureen: "Right, and not to mention, the desire to learn and play various genres stretches you as a musician."

Any tips for new students?

Karen: "Don't. Give. Up."

Maureen: "Hang in there! You'll look back and remember where you began!"

Karen: "Music is art. It's the most valuable thing I've learned. Play for your own enjoyment first."

Maureen: "And find people you can share your progress with. It's worth it!"

Anything else you'd like to say to the people?

Karen: "If you're unsure about playing an instrument or singning, take a leap. Give it a try at Sunburst! You have nothing to lose and a world of joy to gain!"

Maureen: "Yes! Make the music that pleases you!"
