Band Coaching

Take your band to the next level

The Band Coaching program at Sunburst is for musicians looking to learn from working professionals on how to practice, write, record, perform and manage their band. Depending on the age and experience of the band members, the sessions could cover anything from playing tightly as a unit, to local marketing for musicians with social media.

Our main goal with the Band Coaching program is to help students who aspire to play gigs and make albums get organized and avoid some of the common pitfalls associated with being in a band, while still keeping practice fun! In this process, our band coaches are committed to helping students think creatively, make their own decisions, and reach their own conclusions when it comes to their goals and direction as a group.

Some of our band coaching groups formed in the Sunburst Band Program before splitting off into Band Coaching, while some groups came to us as complete bands ready to get to the next level. The roster of Band Coaching groups is left up to the members themselves, we don’t open these groups up to general enrollment unless the group requests that we help find additional band members.

Jam year-round

The Band Coaching program follows a schedule more akin to private lessons for your band, rather than our other term-based group programs. Bands can start and stop on a month-to-month basis. Band Coaching groups can still get slots to perform in our term-end finale shows, we also may be able to provide more performance opportunities throughout the year, and encouraging groups to book gigs on their own is also an important part of the program.

Band Coaching can be booked in 3 different durations:

  • 60 Minutes Weekly - $150/person/month
  • 90 Minutes Weekly - $165/person/month
  • 120 Minutes Weekly - $180/person/month

*** $50 off per month for anyone enrolled in the Private or Group Lessons!***

***We offer a discounted trial rate for new Band Coaching groups to try a session***

Band Coaching FAQ

  • How long is our commitment?

Similar to how we do private lessons, Band Coaching is a month to month commitment, bands need to withdraw together by the 25th of the current month to not be charged for the following month. View our full school policies here.

  • Are their trial sessions available?

Yes! We offer a discounted trial rate for new Band Coaching groups. These are limited to 1 per group per teacher. Here are the rates:

    • 60 Minutes - $25/person
    • 90 Minutes - $30/person
    • 120 Minutes - $35/person

After your group’s trial, we only offer month to month pricing for Band Coaching.

  • How much experience do I need for Band Coaching?

We recommend most students new to playing in a band start with the Sunburst Band Program, Band Coaching is intended to be for groups who have been at it for sometime and are starting to take things more seriously.

  • Do I need to take lessons in addition to the Band Coaching?

The scope of the Band Program and Band Coaching is learning and writing material together as a group, which requires everyone to know at least the basics of their instrument. Students learn and hone their parts on their own time and spend the group session putting the pieces together. We highly recommend weekly private or group lessons to go along with the Band Coaching (and offer a big discount for combining them!), but it’s not an official requirement.

  • What should I bring to my session?

We have all of the equipment you might need for your lesson, so you don’t need to bring anything. Guitarists in particular should bring their guitar if they have one but we recommend using one of our amplifiers. Your instructor may ask that you bring certain books or lessons materials, etc. Check the comments section of your Opus1 account for messages from your instructor related to materials.

  • What happens if I need to miss a session?

We have an extremely flexible cancellation policy! As long as you can provide 24 hour notice you will have the option of joining a Group Make Up Session, see schedule here, and read our full policy details here.

This allows individual members to join our general Group Make Up Sessions, unfortunately our calendar does not allow for rescheduling a Band Coaching session or doing a private make up for the entire group.

  • What performance opportunities are there?

The terms for our other band programs end with finale shows a few times per year (January, June, August). Band Coaching groups are welcome to perform in these, and will also be extended other opportunities to play at events in and around the city as they come up. We also work with band members on how to book more and better gigs for themselves.

Need to miss a session?

We hold free monthly community jam sessions called Sunburst Jams, these are a great way for students who have to miss their band program to get some extra time in!

View the full schedule of upcoming Sunburst Jams Sessions here.

  • No refunds or credits for missed sessions.
  • We're unable to offer private make up sessions for Band Coaching cancellations
